When a kitten named Gelato arrived at Cincinnati Animal CARE, a spinal injury had left his back legs too weak to hold him up. He could still move them, and he'd kept full bowel and bladder control — genuinely good signs — but he was also, physically, too small for every single mobility device the shelter had on hand.
So the medical team improvised. Veterinary assistant lead Mallory Smith gathered wooden rulers, zip ties, tape, and — the star ingredient — a set of Hot Wheels toy cars, and built Gelato a wheelchair sized exactly for him. "He wanted to play and walk around," Medical Director Dr. Amanda Gilbert told Local 12 News. Now he can.
Gelato is staying in foster care with Smith while he heals, and the shelter says he's already getting stronger — standing on his own for little moments here and there. A tiny cat, four toy car wheels, and a whole team that refused to tell him no.
